Dengue Fever

What is dengue, how is it spread?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), dengue is the most prevalent and rapidly spreading mosquito-borne viral disease worldwide. Dengue is transmitted by mosquitoes mainly of the species Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus.

Infected Aedes mosquitoes can transmit each of the four different dengue virus serotypes - this means travellers could be at risk of contracting dengue more than once. Cases have been confirmed in European travellers returning from South America, North America, The Caribbean, Africa, Asia and from within Europe itself

There is a vaccine now available to protect travellers against dengue fever available at both our clinics in Birmingham and Tamworth. Two doses are required, spaced three months apart at a cost of £98 per dose with protection conferred from the first dose.
